ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility

Version 1.06

Notes:

This program is language independent and can be used with any language
system.


What This Package Does
----------------------
This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program
including the Embedded Controller(EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad
system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions
as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:

  - ThinkPad T60, T60p

The supported operating systems are as follows:
  - Microsoft Windows 2000
  - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Summary of Changes
section.

To update the BIOS, refer to the Updating BIOS section.

<1.00>
- (New) Support for ThinkPad T60 and T60p.

<1.01>
- (New) Support for the Deep Smart Power Down feature. (BIOS/EC)
         The Deep Smart Power Down turns off a network interface card when
         a link being down or a network cable being disconnected.
         This function is available in the Windows XP and functions when
         a system is in battery mode.
         The feature will only work with the Intel PRO/1000 PL Network
         Connection 9.2.43.0 (or later).
- (Fix) HV expansion state is always on regardless of the setting of the
         BIOS setup. (BIOS)
- (Fix) ATI Display property does not show a correct memory type. (BIOS)

<1.02>
- (Fix) Shutdown function does not work on the DOS. (BIOS)

<1.03>
- (New) Support for new devices. (BIOS/H8)
- (Fix) When a T60 system is warm docked to a ThinkPad Advanced Dock with
         a hard drive installed, a Hard Disk Password will not prompt
         and the hard drive does not unlock. (BIOS)
- (Fix) When a LCD lid is closed and opened again, a screen resolution may
         change. This will happen only on the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
         950 models only. (BIOS)

<1.04>
- (Fix) Ethernet device does not work intermittently after resuming from
         standby in battery mode. Deep Smart Power Down feature is temporary
         disabled. (BIOS)

<1.05>
- (New) POST 2100 error is subdivided to show individual error message
         for hard drive. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Support for the Deep Smart Power Down feature. (BIOS)
         Note: The feature will only work with the Intel PRO/1000 PL Network
               Connection 9.2.50.0 (or later).
- (Fix) Data Execution Prevention is not correctly disabled in BIOS Setup
         utility. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Performance degradation occurs on infrared device at 4M bps
         transfer rate. (BIOS)

<1.06>
- (New) 1920x1200 resolution display support for Intel video models. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Incomplete docking actions may happen.
         Devices plugged into the dockingstation side are not
         recognized. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Muting beep sound does not work upon entering standby. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Improved frame drop during DVD playback in battery mode. (BIOS)
- (Fix) Wrong characters may be input when you enter information
         with an external PS/2 type keyboard via Y-Cable. (EC)
           - Numeric characters (2, 4, 6 and 8) will be inserted
             intermittently during cursor move with cursor keys.
           - A keyboard behaves as if a shift key is pressed until
             a shift key is actually pressed.
             - You can only type only Uppercase characters. (Some keys
               seem to keystrokes, because the shift cases are not defined)
             - Multiple selection with cursor keys.
             - Numeric keypad will turn to cursor keys.


Updating BIOS
-------------
Notes:
- Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM
  (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
- You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
- If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or
  port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before
  proceeding.
- If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the
  computer and detach it before proceeding.

1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative
    privileges on the target computer.
4. Save this package onto the hard drive.
5. Click the Start button, then click Run.
6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you saved
    the package.
     (e.g. C:\Temp\79UJ07US.EXE) and then click OK.
7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
8. After a License Agreement, extract this package to an appropriate
    directory.
     (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\79UJ07US)
9. Click the Start button, then click Run.
10. Specify a WINTPUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted
    the package.
     (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\1YUJ01US\WINYPUP.EXE) and then click OK.

    Note:
    For unattended update, specify the file name with options
    "-s". (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\79UJ07US\WINUPTP.EXE -s)
    The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

11. Follow the instructions on the screen.
12. Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the
    screen.

    Attention:
    Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has
    been completed.
    IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE
    UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY
    HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

After the update has been completed, the program shows a message
'Flash Update has been successfully completed...'
Press 'Yes' to restart the system.

Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly.

13. Turn off the computer.
14. Turn on the computer.
15. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage
    button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen,
    press the F1 key.
16. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed.
    If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
17. Verify the BIOS Version.
18. Turn off the computer.


Initializing BIOS
-----------------
BIOS Initialization is a suggested for some problems.

To initialize the BIOS setups:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage
    button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen,
    press the F1 key.
4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed.
    If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup
    Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
6. Select Yes.
7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
8. Select Yes.

After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts
automatically.

Note:
After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you
had changed previously.

----------------
Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the
following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program.
The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be
viewed by entering BIOS Setup Utility.

To enter the BIOS Setup Utility:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage
    button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen,
    press the F1 key.
4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed.
    If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
6. Turn off the computer.

Reserved Area:
The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system
program (BIOS) and others.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1300/X1400/FireGL V5200 model

  C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  D0000-D1FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1)
  DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2)
  E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 model

  C0000-CE7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1)
  DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2)
  E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

  Notes:
   *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option
       ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility.
       This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
   *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option
       under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility.
       This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows
       operating systems.

Usable Area:
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as
EMM386.

  Note:
        Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus
        Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
        The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating
        System.
